The Starman returns with 'No Plan' | SMC Remembers David Bowie

by CA Marshall

It has been a year since our beloved Starman's passing and he manages to share with us his final days just prior to his journey into orbit. Today, on what would have been  his 70th birthday, Columbia Records has just released 'No Plan', the last known recordings of David Bowie. The video for the No Plan features haunting imagery from beyond the grave when you hear the sadness in Bowies vocals. (see video below) I am giving you a heads up here: this is very deep, completely sad, angry, and yet, exquisitely beautiful recorded account of the journey through his final days, and I know Bowie wouldn't have it any other way. This was an Artist who always created lyrics from an honest perspective, they were his truths, and No Plan is the most revealing and honest of them all: his time was cut short and he was pissed off about it.

The four-track EP, which is currently available on iTunes, features the songs “No Plan,” “Killing a Little Time” and “When I Met You,” along with “Lazarus” from Bowie’s final studio album Blackstar. Recently, Johan Renck, the director of the video for Blackstar, said Bowie was unaware that his treatments for liver cancer would be unsuccessful until after the Blackstar album was completed. The week they shot the video, Renck said that's when Bowie was informed that his illness had won.

Friends of Bowie's are about to embark on an international tour that begins January 10th, 2017 in honor of the day of his passing. Key Star performers include: Mike Garson, Earl Slick, Adrian Belew, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mark Plati, Sterling Campbell, Zachary Alford, Holly Palmer, Catherine Russell, and very special guests including STING on January 24th at The Wilton, Los Angeles, California.

The bio on the Celebrating David Bowie Tour facebook page reads:
"To honor David Bowie’s 70th birthday, Bowie band members, friends, and a massive ensemble of top recording & touring musicians from around the world are getting together for a one-time only series of global goodwill concerts, in aid of local charities, called Celebrating David Bowie.

The concerts all take place in cities that have a strong connection with David Bowie and his work - London, New York City, Los Angeles, Sydney, & Tokyo. All feature a core two dozen musicians traveling plus many local, regional, and national musicians to create a sound like no other."
I encourage all of our Starlight Music Chronicles readers to head on over to this page and follow the tour updates, photos, and musings because there will be lots to see in the coming weeks!

Finally, I would personally like to add that this day brings me mixed feelings: I released my review of Bowie's Blackstar album on this day one year ago. (see here) It was the first review on The Chronicles for 2016. and days later, I was writing my personal tribute to his life (see here). Had I known that 2016 would be the year that we would lose such integral, significant, and iconic Musicians in the industry, I would have shut my social media off and buried my head in a pillow. However, now looking back on 2016, it seemed right that Bowie would be the first to leave us in 2016 - he was always leading the way in terms of ingenuity, creativity, style and grace.

No Plan is already in my music library and is a reminder to me that: life is precious - our time here is brief, we make every day count, and we never ever stop believing in the magic that comes from our own creativity because it comes from our soul. I believe that this is what Bowie would have wanted for us all.

365 days later and suddenly, the 'stars look very different today.'

Happy Birthday Starman. x

Heaven's Newest Angels | Editor's Personal tribute to David Bowie, Alan Rickman, & Rene Angelil

by CA Marshall

As I posted this banner (above) on our Starlight Music Chronicles Facebook Page as well as my personal wall, a friend shared it with the comment: 'They say it comes in threes' and it had me remembering that this was always something my mother used to say. And then, I began to reminisce.....

I am not writing about the chronological lifetime or career of each of these distinguished gentlemen. I am not going to write about the complete state of shock or sadness the world is in that we are about to bury yet two more of these magnificent souls taken by the very same disease (cancer) as their predecessor, Mr. David Bowie within days and in today's case, the very same day as one another.

I am going to write about what each of these three gentlemen brought positively and personally to my world and what enrichment they have leant to my life as a result of leaving this world.

DAVID BOWIE

'Little China Girl' was the first song that truly had me at 'hello' with our beloved Blackstar (click here to read my review on the album). I remember the 80's very fondly because of musicians like New Order, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Culture Club, and David Bowie (to name a few). I guess I always did have a thing for British Pop/Rock/Alternative culture and it is something that has not left me to this day.

Memories of listening to David Bowie on the radio brings me back to a time in my life where I was transitioning from a young girl to a grown woman and with each passing year, his music brought color and culture into my life through his lyrics, keen fashion sense, and unique sound. I will always maintain that the very sound of his voice catapults me right back to that time and the greatest days of my life. It was a time when my mother was very healthy, I was having a blast in High School and College and there wasn't any worry about this thing called death. I will always associate him with the best time in my life.

I will miss the art of the man they called 'Ziggy Stardust' and more importantly, the man who brought me true appreciation of British Music culture.

ALAN RICKMAN

Sense and Sensibility was not the first time I saw Actor & Director Alan Rickman on the silver screen but it is truly my most memorable moment of this fine Actor. You see, this movie came out at a time in my life when romance was in full bloom as it was the same year I was married.

I remember this transition time in my life also very fondly and I began avidly following Alan throughout his career for the simple fact that he embodied everything that romance stood for to me: he portrayed gentle, calm, delicate, kind, loyal, protective and loving roles in other films as well (aside from his appearance in Die Hard and the Harry Potter series). It helped me to transition from the young woman dating boys to the adult woman who had become a wife and mother all within a few years span. I have often related to books and exceptional Actors in many rites of passage in my life and that has often helped get me through. I am a huge Jane Austen fan as well and Alan brought the role of Colonel Brandon to life in a way that so few Actors could ever do. His art will also be missed greatly.

RENE ANGELIL

As a fan and connoisseur of Celine Dion from the mid nineties until today, it is safe to say that 'behind every great woman, there is a great man'. This man was René Angélil.

I have always seen the love and support my mother received in her last days with my father who took such care of her in her last days of her life. Similarly, I saw this same pattern in this great man who taught me endurance and trust and to cherish the bonds between friends, family, and otherwise and I really admired him for that. I know, I know, I admire a LOT of industry people but really, isn't that what life is all about? Having a passion for what you do and loving it?

This was a tough one to hear about because I feel that the time between these two magnificent people was cut way too short and I am reminded today that we are not getting any younger....the relationships and bonds we build in our lifetimes are precious. Hold the ones you hold dear close.

In closing and as an industry professional, I am sending my condolences to all of the families affected by these losses. As an individual, I would like to add this:

We are often busy getting 'to that thing' we need to do or 'hurrying up time' to 'get through' life. I caution you all to stop today and calm your mind, grab a warm blanket and a cup of tea and just allow yourself to be.....really be, and connect to whomever or whatever brings you peace. Tomorrow is uncertain, yesterday is a memory, but this very moment is what you've got so make it everything you want it to be~

David Bowie: Epic Release of BLACKSTAR Album & Birthday Wishes

by CA Marshall

I really thought I had begun the year on a positive note when I saw the new Star Wars movie for the first time only this week, but as luck would have it, my ears were treated to it's absolute equivalent with the release of David Bowie's 'BLACKSTAR' album today, his 69th Birthday.

I have listened to this album from beginning to end and it is safe to say this: in his whole career from the 'good ole days' (known as Ziggy Stardust to our younger generation of readers) right through the 80's (when I was introduced to his epic awesomeness) up to this very moment as I type these words, David Bowie is and always will be the epitome of EPIC COOL.

Classic Bowie as 'Ziggy Stardust'

This album is all new and yet, all familiar in its content: the lyrics and sound in each song are truly reminiscent of a time long ago when Bowie was known as 'the strange one' and yet, they reflect a man who has effortlessly and unquestionably pulled off this 'epic weirdness' with the kind of class that is uniquely his own: it is just who he is and who we know him to be.

I believe that a younger generation of listeners are in for a real treat with this album and I really mean that. In a day where there is so much production of 'cookie cutter' music (let's call it that for arguments sake), this album goes beyond something new: it is a special and unique compilation of Bowie's vintage sounds mixed with modern jazz accents that are perfectly suited to everything from the ecclectic Artsy College crowds to the high class society Dinner Parties to that moment when one just needs to sit down, chill the ____ out, and be taken to a place otherworldly. Clearly, this mastermind has mastered his own Art and has gone a step beyond with this album.

No other song is the same in this album yet they are completely Bowie: reflective, new age, modern, vintage, (modern and vintage? yes - a feat Bowie pulls off well!) classy, fun, unique, and different! And don't get me started on this man's iconic vocals: they are flawless and reminiscent of the 'Little China Girl' days that I remember where just hearing his voice made my ears perk right up.

I am extremely picky about what I choose to listen to over and over and over again. It has to really have staying power for me to want to hear a song (no less, an album) more than once but this album in it's entirety is impeccable and is already on my iPod, iPad, iPhone and will be for years and years to come.

Thank you David Bowie. You have treated US on YOUR birthday to the greatest gift of all: you. Happy Birthday to you and and to the inception of BLACKSTAR!

Does it get any better than this?

PS: My favourite songs on this album are 'Girl Loves Me', and 'I Can't Give Everything Away'. Impeccable and Classic. Also, see Star Wars and you'll know what I mean.

Enjoy!
