If music ultimately translates more to a feeling than anything else, you’ve likely experienced the music of Toronto-based singer-songwriter Tyler MacGregor before because you’ve likely placed your bare feet into cool green grass.
If you have, you know the moment often comes hesitantly, much like checking out a band or performer you’ve never heard of before. Perhaps sitting in a park on a hot July lunch break from the office, you think about kicking off your shoes, worn for so long that you’ve forgotten just how confining they feel and how feet were made for freedom. You stop. You think about it again, and when you eventually spread your toes within the grass, a sudden freshness overwhelms you. By the grace of inclination, everything seems lighter. You wonder why you haven’t done it more often. You feel grounded in some elusive yet distinct way. Even the wind seems to know the change and wafts around as if to breathe into a new fire, and as you wish you could somehow capture the essence of it all to take it with you, a new album begins taking shape—Foolish Heart Songs—to allow just that.
Slated for release this summer to iTunes or Bandcamp, 'Foolish Heart Songs' will be the first album by MacGregor, whose introspective acoustic-based song-craft and engagingly melodic vocals are easily compared to John Mayer and Ed Sheeran. Some of the tracks will be redone versions of songs previously released to SoundCloud. Others will be new compositions, and in the unknown release date of the album, it’s a comparative harkening back to Peter Gabriel.
Long before Facebook became a standard social-media component, Peter Gabriel used to wear a webcam to allow fans real-time behind-the-scenes access during the album-creation process. As a musical and video innovator, he understood that, where life was a journey rather than a destination, social technology offered that journey in previously unknown ways between artists and followers. So a journey’s currently unfolding—a journey with a unique artist collecting those green-grass moments into a forthcoming album called Foolish Heart Songs but also showing through his songs that those moments are here and they’re now.
